Scot on the Rocks, #3 in Catriona McPherson’s A Last Ditch mystery series, tackles some weird family dynamics, too (see my earlier posts on my novels’ theme of family), but with more laughs than I can manage. As I always told my students, writing humor well is tough! McPherson has that knack in spades, and it’s a big part of why I stick with her MC Lexy, a transplanted Scot, and her quirky friends. The first two in the series are just as much fun.
Lexy’s side-kicks (and uninvited business partners) are wonderful characters in their own right. I couldn’t begin to do justice to the convoluted plot if I tried to summarize it, but trust me – McPherson ties it all up with a tartan bow and left me chuckling.
This book got me through a tough family time of my own. Last Ditch #4, Scot Mist, awaits on my Nook for when the winter doldrums set in (I’m writing this in January) and I need to escape to sunny (fictional) Cuento, California. I’m guessing #5 and 6 won’t be far behind.
And it doesn’t hurt that I hear McPherson’s wonderful Scottish accent as I read 😉
